2. “You look amazing!”
Many Japanese women seemed to focus on the power embedded in the word “amazing.” “People don’t tell me often that I look amazing,” revealed one Japanese woman in her 20s. Another woman in her 20s told us, “I think whoever tells me that I’m amazing is amazing himself.” Furthermore, a woman in her 30s made a thoughtful observation: “You feel more nervous when someone of the opposite gender judges how fashionable you are. The expression ‘you look amazing’ is perfect in that sense because it gives you a sense that he’s commenting on your overall appearance and not just your fashion sense.”
